He worked on his uncle's plantation in the Vuelta Abajo. Around 1850, he went to Havana to create a factory as well as his own cigar brand: La Escepcion.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eIt was an immediate success and in the 1860s,\u003c\/strong\u003e José Gener used the capital he had acquired to buy the \"Hoyo de Monterrey\" farm located in the heart of the famous Vuelta Abajo in San Juan y Martinez. In Spanish, \"Hoyo\" means hole and \"Hoyo de Monterrey\" means the hole of Monterrey. A term particularly fitting for this Vega, which stretches along the lower banks of the river that irrigates \u003cstrong\u003eSan Juan y Martinez.\u003c\/strong\u003e This terroir was renowned for producing the finest Cuban tobacco at the time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center\"\u003eThe Hoyo de Monterrey cigar brand of José Gener was registered in 1865, at the address of his factory at 7, Principe Alfonso Street, Havana. The cigars, made with sweet and aromatic blends, quickly achieved international success and were very popular in England.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center\"\u003eDon José Gener y Batet returned to Spain in 1895 and died there in 1900. His daughter, Lutgarda Gener, took over the prosperous family business. \u003cstrong\u003eAt that time, the Hoyo de Monterrey factory was the largest in Cuba, employing no fewer than 350 workers.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center\"\u003eAfter José Gener's death, demand for cigars declined. \u003cstrong\u003eThe family focused more on cane plantations than tobacco fields.\u003c\/strong\u003e In 1931, the Hoyo de Monterrey brand, along with La Escepcion, was sold to the company Fernandez Palicio y Ca. This company had been founded by Ramon Fernandez and Fernando Palicio, \u003cstrong\u003eand it already owned two brands, and not just any brands: Punch and Belinda.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center\"\u003eRamon Fernandez died in 1948, Fernando Palicio took over the business and created the company Fernandez, Palicio et Cia S.A., where he was the sole owner.
