Castro hired Rivera to roll cigars for his own consumption and had him work with five other rollers in an old diplomatic villa in the outskirts of Havana known as El Laguito (the little lake in Spanish). Later, this factory became the first to have a team made entirely of female cigar rollers. Security at the factory was taken very seriously, and only workers and government officials were allowed into the most critical areas of the factory.

These cigars were reserved for Fidel Castro and the highest-ranking figures in the Cuban government and were often used as gifts for foreign dignitaries. Moreover, given the rumors of CIA assassination attempts against Fidel Castro, it is no surprise that Castro decided to smoke only cigars produced under extremely secure conditions, especially since one of the ways the CIA was reportedly considering eliminating Castro was an explosive cigar. It is said that Castro himself particularly enjoyed the long, slim cigars rolled for him, which gave rise to the Lancero and the Corona Especial.

Castro decided to turn his personal cigars into a luxury cigar brand for public consumption during the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain. In 1989, three additional vitolas were released: the Robusto, the Exquisito and the Espléndido.
