How do you repair a damaged cigar?

What could be worse for a cigar lover than opening his humidor and discovering that one of his favorite cigars has one or more cracks? Any crack in the wrapper can indeed significantly affect the quality of your smoke by preventing the cigar from burning properly. But don’t panic, there are solutions to repair your cigars and let you enjoy a first-class smoke.

Determining the extent of the damage

Before taking the necessary steps to restore your cigars, it is important to assess the extent of the damage. While a slightly cracked wrapper will only require a small patch, a larger tear will call for a more careful repair. On the other hand, if your cigar has a fragmented wrapper all over its surface, like a crispy spring roll, it is likely that its time is up and that you won’t be able to repair it.

The most suitable solutions for repairing a damaged cigar

Many cigar lovers think they can fix a crack simply by licking the wrapper leaf of their cigar. However, this method is anything but effective, since saliva will damage the structure of the wrapper and dry as it burns. You’ll end up with a partly smoked cigar that will keep cracking. Rather than licking your cigar, we recommend applying one of the two following methods:

Vegetable glue for minor cracks

a. Fruit pectin

The most common and least invasive technique for repairing a cracked cigar is to apply a layer of pectin to the split. This citrus extract usually comes in the form of a light beige powder solution. It is used as a gelling agent in the preparation of jams and jellies and can easily be found in supermarkets. Because it has neither taste nor smell, it is a particularly suitable solution for restoring a cigar. You can therefore use it without risking damage to your cigar’s aromas.

To prepare your glue, you will need a plastic bottle cap, a toothpick or thin stick, and a dose of distilled water.

1. Fill half of your cap with distilled water.
2. Add a dose of pectin and stir the mixture until you get a milky-colored solution.
3. If your mixture is too runny, add an additional dose of pectin. Your mixture should thicken until it resembles honey or glucose syrup.

Once your mixture is ready, use a brush to seal the crack. Ideally, your brush strokes should follow the direction of your wrapper leaf’s veins so as not to damage it further. Also keep in mind that pectin takes time to dry. So don’t rush to your cigar cutter once the crack has been sealed. This technique also works with gum arabic.

b. PerfecRepair glue

Some cracks are simply too large to be sealed with vegetable glue alone. In that case, you will need to carry out a “wrapper leaf patch.” For this delicate operation, you will need a cutter or a sharp knife such as the Les Fines Lames cigar cutter, vegetable glue, a donor cigar, and a brush.

To avoid affecting the aromatic profile of your cigar, it is advisable to choose a replacement module made from tobacco leaves from the same terroir as your cigar. Needless to say, this cigar should be of lesser quality than the one you want to repair.

1. Carefully cut a piece of wrapper leaf, slightly larger than the crack, from the donor cigar.
2. Using your brush, apply a layer of glue to the tear as well as to the piece of wrapper leaf you have removed.
3. Place your piece of wrapper leaf over the crack and press gently to secure it at each end.
4. Do not hesitate to add a little more glue at each corner to make sure no air gaps remain.
5. Wait for the glue to dry before lighting your cigar.

Keep in mind that whatever method you use to repair your cigar, you will need to handle it carefully and delicately so as not to damage it further.

Less Conventional but Effective Remedies

It sometimes happens that you have neither pectin nor vegetable glue at hand. In that case, you can repair your damaged cigars using alternative solutions. Less effective and less safe than conventional methods, these homemade fixes can nevertheless allow you to seal minor cracks so you can enjoy your precious smokes quickly.

Just like pectin, honey offers a thick, sticky texture that can seal the holes in the wrapper. However, its taste can slightly alter the aromatic profile of your cigar. Lip balm is also an all-in-one solution for repairing a damaged cigar. Be careful, however, not to use flavored lip balm so as not to compromise the quality of your tasting experience.

How can you prevent a cigar from getting damaged?

Cracks on cigars generally appear when their transport and storage conditions are not optimal. They can also be the result of poor handling. A lack of humidity, exposure to heat and sunlight, an incorrect cut, or even removing the band before lighting are therefore the main causes of cigar deterioration.

To limit the risk of cracks on your cigars, make sure to keep the relative humidity in your humidor between 65% and 70% and place it in a dry location away from light. Also handle your cigars with care and wait until your cigar has warmed up slightly before removing its band.
