The Romeo y Julieta brand was founded in Havana in 1875 by two Spaniards, Inocensio Alvarez Rodriguez and José Manin Garcia. Thirty years later, the factory was bought by José Rodriguez, known as « Don Pepin », who would go on to significantly develop the brand, especially for export, and even buy the Capulet Palace in Verona, where he set up a cigar shop.

Until World War II, Romeo y Julieta stood out for producing mainly « figurados », cigars rolled to a point at both ends, as well as for customizing the band, so that anyone could have cigars made in their own name.
