Tout savoir sur les Edición Regional Habanos S.A
Every year, Habanos S.A, the company responsible for the promotion, distribution, and export of premium cigars, introduces various exclusive editions to the great delight of aficionados. Among them, the Regional Editions (Edición Regional) are now among the most eagerly awaited releases for habanos lovers and collectors around the world.
What Is a Regional Edition?
The Edición Regional Serie program was introduced by Habanos S.A in 2005. It allows official distributors in different countries to order cigars produced exclusively for their respective markets.
Initially, these cigars could not be selected from Habanos S.A’s “Global brands” and “Niche Brands.” This meant there could be no Regional Editions of Cohiba, Partagás, Romeo Y Julieta, or even Hoyo de Monterrey. But in 2019, Habanos S.A simplified the way it classifies its brands, which allowed certain brands such as Cuaba and San Cristóbal de la Habana to become eligible for Regional Editions.
Before that date, Cuban brands were ranked according to four different categories: Global Brands, Niche Brands, Multi-Local Brands, and Local Brands. Since 2019, only two categories remain: Global Brands and Portfolio Brands. It has also happened that a brand was created especially for the occasion. This was the case with the Edmundo Dantes El Conde 109 Edición Regional México 2007. Since then, two other Regional Editions for Mexico have been produced under the Edmundo Dantes brand: the Conde 54 2011 and the Conde Belicoso 2016. In addition to the limited brand selection, distributors must also meet certain specific production criteria. While Limited Editions must contain tobacco aged for at least two years, Regional Editions must instead use a vitola that already exists in Habanos S.A’s catalog, but does not appear in the regular portfolio of the brand in question. Since 2016, a single region can no longer have two Regional Editions of the same brand in consecutive years. Some distributors, however, have managed to get around this rule by dividing their region into several smaller territories.
How are Regional Editions made?
The launch of a Regional Edition is initiated by the distributors. They approach Habanos S.A. with an idea for a cigar in mind (brand, vitola, packaging, etc.). These cigars generally reflect the classic organoleptic characteristics of the brands. Each distributor also commits to ordering a minimum of 25,000 cigars and to paying the production costs in advance. For its part, Habanos S.A. produces three prototypes for each edition. It then presents them to the distributor so that they can determine which one will go into final production. Once manufactured, Regional Editions are sold exclusively for one year in the distributor’s territory. Depending on how they are received by consumers, production may be extended for an additional year, still exclusively. These reissues are identical in every respect to the original edition, except for an inscription on the box stating that it is a reissue. Once the initial two-year period has elapsed, Habanos may decide to discontinue production or incorporate it into the brand’s regular portfolio.
How do you recognize an “Edición Regional”?
Regional Editions are generally produced in batches of 10,000 boxes of 10 cigars each. These boxes are also numbered, which helps give them added value in the eyes of aficionados.
To distinguish Regional Editions from Habanos’ other exclusive productions, each cigar is dressed with two bands. The first band features the brand’s standard logo, but it may also be a replica of an older band. The second, meanwhile, bears the word “Exclusivo” followed by the name (in Spanish) of the region for which the edition is produced. It is always red with a silver stripe. An additional band is sometimes added when the cigars have been produced for a special event. This is generally the case for Regional Editions that celebrate an anniversary date.
What is the appeal of Regional Editions for consumers?
Regional Editions were introduced by Habanos S.A. with the aim of promoting certain cigar brands that are less well known internationally. They thus give Habanos enthusiasts the opportunity to discover brands such as Rafael González, Quai d’Orsay or Diplomaticos, which, thanks to their contribution to the history and culture of premium cigars, deserve to be recognized. The main appeal of Regional Editions for aficionados is therefore the chance to discover cigars of outstanding quality and enjoy new aromatic blends.
The limited and exclusive production of these cigars also helps enhance their value on the market. Regional Editions are therefore highly sought after by collectors around the world. Because of their exceptional composition, these cigars also have excellent aging potential. They are therefore a particularly wise investment, as their value only increases over the years.
